About Bundaberg Rotaract

How It All Began...

The Rotaract Club of Bundaberg has been something that the Rotary Club of Bundaberg Sunrise wanted for a while, since the folding of the Rotaract Club of Bundaberg West in 1982.

Tom Head, Rotaract District Chair from the Sunrise Rotary Club was a big driving force to help get us up and running. Tom felt that Bundaberg can be a difficult place to make new friends and socialise with people around the same age, and that there was little community involvement for young people, and a Rotaract Club seemed to be one way of helping that.

Tom approached Alicia Otto, who had attended a Sunrise Rotary meetingas a guest speaker, highlighting her experience on the 2011 RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award and her desire to see a Rotaract club in Bundaberg after meeting Rotaract members from the Gladstone Club at the camp.

Tom and Alicia arranged an information afternoon to be held at the The Club Hotel in Bundaberg. The information night was attended by 4 potential members who had an interest in joining a club, after a Facebook campaign and word of mouth with other Rotary Clubs in the area.

It seemed at the time, that it may be a while before a club in Bundaberg could get up and running, but we had decided to keep chipping away at it. It was decided that another information session was to be held a month later, in early August. The second info night was met with about 8 people, so we had doubled our numbers from the first one.

Every 2 weeks we kept going with regular meetings, and working out events we would like to, and how as a club we can work together with the other 7 Rotary Clubs in Bundaberg. Attending these meetings gave the potential members more insights into Rotary and Rotaract structure and operations.

Eventually our club started to get quite strong and in only a few months, we tendered for Charter in later September, and we officially heard word back that we had been chartered by Rotary International 27 October 2011. We attended a formal Charter night with our parent club, Rotary Club of Bundaberg Sunrise on the 31 March 2012, where our District Governor – Ian Mylrea and the Mayor, Lorraine Pyfinch were in attendance.

This charter night inducted us into the brand new world of Rotaract.

Since forming the Rotaract Club of Bundaberg, we have taken part in various events around Bundaberg, including Bundy Thunder (2011), Rotary Sunrise Multicultural Festival (2011 and 2012), Bundaberg Show (2012). We have also held events on our own and with others including; ABC Christmas BBQ, Literacy Week BBQ and Relay for Life.

Our club prides itself on being a fun, inspirational, & motivating club, where you can make new friends, help the community and learn about yourself. Some of the fun we have as a club consist of Social Nights, Themed Parties & Meetings, Fun Games & Activities just to name a few.

So that is the story, if you are not a member, well then you should be? What are you waiting for contact us now, or come along to one of our meetings!
